Bits o’ BlogHer

August 18, 2011

I have meant to write a post as one last follow up to BlogHer. Because I’ve read a few of yours after my Discouraged one, and I need to clear some things up.

I was in total overload coming home from BlogHer. I felt as if everything was a jumbled mess. I meant what I wrote, but I want to be clear: I’d go to BlogHer again. What I learned there (even the tough parts) gave me so much to think on when I came home. It was worth every penny to go – from friendships to the sessions. The session I attended that was discouraging – it wasn’t the BlogHer people. In fact, the woman from BlogHer was the one who made it clear they take big and small bloggers for syndication and beyond. I understand what the other panelists were trying to convey, I just thought it was hard to hear and accept. And in some ways? I still don’t.

In the past two weeks, I have reflected so much on what I learned. And it’s changed me for the better.

On that note, I thought I’d share a few of the highlights that I haven’t before. So no one walks away from my blog thinking, “I’ll never attend a conference.” Because if you can and want to, you should.

————————————————–

I came home with a new phone. And it went to Sam. Because even though my iPhone is cracked, I just couldn’t part with it. This was because we were on the HTC panel giving them our “Dream Phone” advice.

Clockwise from left: The Expo Hall, the Thunderbolt compliments of an HTC panel, the Convention Center, Ricki Lake speaking at the Keynote

I met Molly from A Day in Mollywood and promptly SQUEEEED all over her. She graciously understood. Also – yoga in front of the beach with a celebrity trainer was amazing. Thanks Filtrete.

I met Dana from The Sears Fam. Who is awesome. I got to squish Erika, my childhood bestie that is currently pregnant with one of the world’s most adorable children. And I had mocktails. A lot of them.

I met Mario Lopez. What? I didn’t tell you that? :p Yep, live and in person. I even said hi, and he said hi, and then I said thanks. And ::flips hair:: like it was totally amazing. Sorry about the pic, the camera must have been funky.

My roomies. Who ::ahemMirandaahem:: were awesome enough to score us and 20 other bloggers After Flats for the times when 5 minutes after wearing our heels we wanted to die. They are the coolest things, so small with a little carry case and in 4 different colors. I could have hugged those people after my poor Sparklecorn shoe choice that my feet are still not healed from. True story. So thank you After Flats, BlogHer would have been a lot more painful without your magic.

Roomies and AfterFlats

Oh LORDY. Where do I even begin with this tidbit of heaven? I finally met BA from Heir to Blair. I’ve read her for 2 1/2 years now. She has changed my life. Honestly, I was so worried I would meet her and then think, “Meh, she’s a normal person like all of us. MASSIVE GIRL CRUSH over.” Instead? I have to say I adore her even more. She was so sweet and pretty, so very funny and casual – it was like we’d met a thousand times.

And me? I tried so very hard not to be lame or stalkerish or look like I might have a seizure at any moment but in these pics I was thinking the entire time, “OMG BA IS STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO ME.”

I would have drawn the line at drinking coffee she dipped her hand in though. Really.

I think this pretty much speaks for itself.

And that, my friends, was the rest of BlogHer in a picture filled nutshell. Thanks for sticking around for it all.

I know it – that was one of my biggest regrets there. I saw you so many times but it was always in passing. Next year I’m going to take more time to be with friends. Less swag.

I’m putting on my forehead. Who knows how often I stared at a chest trying to read those tiny little cards but looking like some kind of a perv? Glad we finally connected!

Ahem. Whoever would have come away with that impression? Anywho…

I’m so glad you had such a lovely time. Thank you for writing this. I do hope I get to go to a conference, someday, when it’s my time and it’s something that fits into my life. I would be absolutely starstruck if I met you and Miranda.

Awwwww, you are so sweet! Getting to know you was one of the highlights of BlogHer. And if you read my last post you know that’s saying a lot. I didn’t have many highlights 🙂

I so enjoyed meeting you and I’m definitely a BIG fan of yours. Commence squeeing any time you feel like it!

I read it off my phone last night and my phone won’t let me comment. It was a tough post to read, it was so honest and made my heart hurt so much. You are an incredible woman and I am proud to have met you.

I just wanted to say something to ENCOURAGE you after reading both this post and your last post. I believe there are different types of bloggers out there.

    1. The type of blogger who only blogs to make money, their site is full of sponsored ads, giveaway/reviews, and very little “personal content”

    2. The type of blogger who blogs about their everyday life, things that they love/hate, and give you an inside look to them. They may be small blogs, they may be unsponsored blogs but they are REAL.

You have to decide where you want to fit in. I discussed this with my husband because I’m finally back to blogging again. While I’d love it if someone wanted to pay me to write a review or two that is great but my blog is about ME. It’s MY outlet. I cuss on my blog, I write mean things on my blog. I’d hate to not be able to be honest because someone is sponsoring me.

What I’m basically saying is that I really enjoy your blog just the way it is. If you want to get paid to write I’d start out small. From my understanding your blog isn’t about making money, its about telling your honest feelings and I appreciate that.

Please keep up the good work and should you decide to attend BlogHer12, I really do look forward to meeting you!

Thank you so much Jenny – this was such a positive, thoughtful comment. I agree – the two blog types are both wonderful and hard to mix. I’m not good at it. I’m in the process of working on a second one so I hope maybe I can do what I love and get paid. Maybe!

You are totally right it wasn’t the Blogher people at all but there are def some things they should do differently. Seeing your face makes me grrr I remember seeing that pretty face everywhere and thinking do I know her? Next time I will just hug and say hi. Cannot stop kicking myself in the ass.

How many times did we bump into each other!? I am so mad about that.

Hopefully next year some of the panels are different than they were this year. Maybe a few can cater towards smaller blogs trying to get out there a bit more with writing.

Aww, sounds like a lovely time! I really hope I get to go to BlogHer ’12 in NYC. I have no excuse not to, since I live within driving distance. I hope my social anxiety doesn’t get the better of me & I miss out on a great opportunity to learn how to make my blog better & to meet some of my favorite bloggers, including you! I’m sure I’ll be the creepy girl standing in the corner too shy to say hi.

You have to come. It’s really worth it, I get super nervous in crowds and with unknown people but it’s so worth it.

I may see you in NY before then though. 😉

    mmmm hands. yummy yummy hands.

I WANT TO WEAR YOUR SKIN.

Is that creepy? Over the top? No? Okay, then.

Also? you were one of my greatest BlogHer highlights. I am only heartbroken that we didn’t get more time together. Let’s remedy that.

      ::hands over skin::

And yes, let’s remedy that. If only we lived just a tad closer.
