Valentine’s Day and PinterCrafty.

February 14, 2013

Yesterday I was stalking looking through Instagram and started to see a repeat of the same little theme.

Handmade Valentines.

Pinterest ideas.

Photos that make you swoon.

Little party bags full of goodness, each lovingly created.

And I felt a little tug. One that I feel every so often as a pretty much “writing” blogger with very crafty friends.

That I should really try harder to be crafty. Even though Bella isn’t in preschool and we don’t have a party to go to, I should have made treats. We should have done cards. I should be up late hand cutting things for the table and make a cute little breakfast. I could blog it! Pin it! I could do this!

Just like the handmade Christmas wreath off Pinterest last year. Did I ever show you all that?

Oh THAT’S RIGHT. It broke into a billion little foam pieces after sitting under my desk for a month and the yarn went everywhere. Then the cats ate it and barfed it back up with thanks. That’s why no one ever saw it.

I had to laugh. Because while I think the crafty things other moms do are pretty darn amazing, I simply am not that person. And slowly, over the past year or so, I’m learning to accept that with a little more grace. It’s simply not my gift in life. Maybe God gave me a gift to write so I could earn money to buy those crafty things instead.

So this Valentine’s Day, I have Bella gluing on little hearts with her friend onto construction paper. We might make cupcakes if I have time – smothered in store-bought Funfetti frosting (or I might just grab a spoon). Because while I wish I was crafty and had the patience to do all that, I’m just not. And leaving that gift and love to others who really do enjoy it might be the best choice I’ve made as a mom.

So if this is you, if you’re looking at those gorgeous holiday crafts and thinking, “If I just could…” it’s ok not to! Find what you are good at instead and pour yourself into it. Goodness, not all of us are good at everything. Why do we always feel the need to be?

Excepting the Pioneer Woman. But she’s just a amazing good-at-everything rarity.

And if you are a super crafty person, I would like you to know that I have an account with Etsy. And an app for it. And a PayPal account. So we can work something out for Easter. 😉

I always say that I’m crafty, not artsy. I suppose I would be less crafty without the Internet. Pinterest and Etsy are my homies for sure!!!

My favorite saying, next to a sketch of a pregnant woman, “I’m so crafty, I make people.” I love it.

Yes! I could have written this myself. I’m really trying to get over the mom guilt about some of the “mom” things I’m not good at, like crafting and cooking. Like you said, we can’t be good at everything (or enjoy everything for that matter). It’s so much more productive to work at developing our talents and our passions rather than trying to force ourselves into someone else’ mold.

Hope you and Bella enjoy your Valentine’s Day! 🙂

I save up my craftiness for a few special occasions each year. Valentine’s Day is one of those occasions. But believe me, my Valentine’s are nothing fancy!

I need to learn to accept it soon. I still feel really bad when I see all the craftiness going on and I suck at it 🙁

With Abby home this week with my mom, I could have printed out some Valentine’s coloring sheets for her to do. But you know, I didn’t. She did color on a card she gave to her daddy this morning. One that I bought at the store. Yesterday. Because I’m a great planner 😉

My mom wasn’t crafty. And I think I turned out pretty OK 😉

If the worst your kids can say about you is you never came up with a craft that went wild on Pinterest, I’d say you’re winning parenthood 🙂 You do stuff with Bella like TEACHING her stuff. I’m bad with the teaching. You inspire me.

I’m not creative craft-wise. I can pretty much re-create anything, but there’s no way in hell I’d come up with it all on my own. That makes me feel like a loser.

If every person was crafty, there would be no reason for Etsy, and that would just be a sad, sad world.

      Etsy for life.
