Big and Strong

May 31, 2013

Thursday I took Bella to the perinatologist with me. She checks on my cervix length and cerclage, then we always get a look at the baby. I haven’t seen him in a month, so I was pretty excited to see how much he’d grown and what he might look like at this point. I was 27 weeks and 4 days.

The tech measured everything of his again – we saw his arm and leg bones, head, heard his heartbeat. Bella loved that. It’s her favorite part. She calls it the “whoosh whoosh.”

When the Dr came in, she looked at the measurements and grinned at me. “He’s a big boy! Clocking in at 29 weeks and 5 days and 3lbs!”

Now, this might seem totally normal to some of you who have had babies measure big, but for us it was a major moment. Bella was only 6lbs 12 oz when she was born. The twins were also under what they should have been for their gestational ages. So to hear those words – it was wonderful. So reassuring to know that he’s doing good, things are ok.

Of course, I needed to ask to make sure it wasn’t a sign of something wrong or would be an issue, but she assured me it was fine and really great for him to be there already.

Then Beth Anne (after we text squealed together) told me when he came out my vagina would explode.

I love her honesty so much.

The most comforting thought is if I don’t make it to full term, since I never have, he has a really good chance of being a little ahead of the game anyway. We all know that makes things easier on everyone. The relief in Sam’s eyes was just – unforgettable. He said it took so much stress and worry off when he could know things are this good.

That night, Sam and I sat by Bella’s bed to pray, like we always do, and it’s become a bit of a routine to say, “Please keep the baby growing big and strong.” But that night, after I said it, we both looked up and grinned at each other. It hit us that what we’d prayed for since – 3 or 4 weeks along? – had happened.

Big and strong. Now let’s get him to the 40 week line.

27 week ultrasoundThe waves/odd chunks are the umbilical cord that’s always in his face. We think he looks so much like Bella!

Congrats on the great report back from the ultrasound! I got shivers when I read how your little family prayed every night for the baby to be big and strong! Just another wonderful reminder of how God answers our prayers 🙂
