The Softest PlayDough Ever – in Just Three Ingredients
Last night Bella and I made 3 batches of this soft playdough with only 3 ingredients. It was so simple I had to share. It’s based off the popular pin that uses hair conditioner and cornstarch, but the conditioner ended up making both our hands and arms itchy. I switched to unscented lotion instead and it worked wonderfully. It also left our hands feeling wonderful – a plus in this dry climate.
Here’s how to make this three ingredient, super soft playdough.
You’ll Need:
- Cornstarch (at least one 16 oz box)
- Unscented, white lotion (I used Vaseline)
- Food coloring
Directions:
In a medium sized bowl, pour in 1 part lotion to 3 parts cornstarch. Start with around 3 drops of food coloring, add more as you mix for a stronger color if desired. Stir until mixture is combined completely, it will seem very powdery at first.
Playdough should form a ball and stick together but not to your hands. Add a small amount of lotion or cornstarch until you get the right texture.
- For scented playdough add in a few drops of essential oil – like peppermint.
- If playdough dries a bit, you can add a very small amount of water or lotion and hand mix in.
Store in plastic bags.
Have fun! Feel free to pin and share. xo
Note: this is not an edible playdough!

Just made this with my kids… definitely needed to add lotion and it still is a bit powdery but my kids are having a blast! I just kept adding a bit of lotion at a time until I got a good consistency. Next time I’ll try a 1 to 2 ratio first and add whatever is needed. Thanks so much for the recipe!

Wow, ‘mom fail’ over here. About how long did you have to mix this? I don’t feel like I’m getting beyond a pile of powder….
