The Christmas Card Mystery

January 5, 2012

I grab the keys from Sam’s hand and open the mailbox in delight. Christmas time is my favorite for many reasons, but I think the cards we get from the people we love has to be one of the top ten.

As he drives home, I tear them open and read each one, some making me tear up and others laugh. I show Sam, “Look, here’s their new baby,” and “This one is from the blogger that I’m always talking about – so sweet.” As we pull into the driveway, I open the last one in the pile.

A beautiful family beams back at me. Fresh faced children, smiles all around, proud parents behind them. All are dressed up. “Merry Christmas from the ____ Family!” shines from the page.

It’s a perfect Christmas card of love, happiness, and pure joy.

And I have absolutely no idea who anyone in the picture is.

I stare at it for a while, trying to figure out if I recognize the face. Nothing. No idea.

Turning over the envelope, I see it has “Diana and Family” with our address. The return address doesn’t ring a bell. In fact, I don’t know anyone that lives there.

Sam looks over. “How do you know them?” he asks casually, fully expecting me to start with “Twitter, Blogs, Facebook.”

“Um. I don’t know.”

His eyebrows raise. “You mean you don’t recognize them or you’re not sure…”

I stare at it again. “No, like I have never seen any of them before in my life.”

I head inside and pull up my Facebook account. I have no friends with their last name.

I google their address. Nothing.

Maybe I’d know their kids face? I look intently again, but I really don’t have any idea.

Feeling terrible that someone sent me a card just to have me stare blankly at it (and not send one in return), I ask around. But no, there is no one near us named Diana. And the address was correct.

So the card sits. On my desk. For me to ponder over.

Sometimes the curiosity really gets to me.

Sam wants to know if I randomly give out my address to people.

I’m wondering if perhaps I do and don’t know it. Because I certainly need to pay more attention to life when I get lovely Christmas cards and I don’t even know who they’re from. lol.

If you sent it – thank you! It’s really a sweet card.

And sorry…

LOL I’ve never had that happen. But if it makes you feel better, I was on a phone call the other day for almost 10 min before I knew who I was talking to. She obviously knew me and expected I’d know her so I just played along. But it seemed like forever til I knew who it was!

LOL! Funny girl! J would be wondering the same thing. He already thinks it’s “special” that I have friends in the computer. That’s so random!
