Week 2 of MFP: Nailed it.

July 2, 2012

So this week on MyFitnessPal I buckled down, entered my food, exercised, and gave it my very best.

And I lost 4.5 lbs.

::throws confetti::

I’m down to 164.4!

Here’s what changed:

Even though I didn’t respond to each comment, I read each and every one – I always do. Promise. And they stuck with me, the basic words of “You can do this, it works, keep going.” Then a few jumped out about how any successful plan to be healthier takes work, Weight Watchers also requires me to enter my meals, and this one in particular from Jen:

“It is painful and I keep telling myself it shouldn’t have to be this hard but then I ask myself one simple question- Do I want to be right or successful?”

That was in my head all week. I want to be healthy, to not have to go buy new clothes, to lose the extra baby weight that really isn’t good for me to have. I don’t want to be a stick, I simply want to feel better.

So between yoga and my Tony Little Gazelle (yes, all the way back to the very beginning of Beth Anne’s McFatty Monday’s) I worked out almost every day this week. And I entered all the ingredients (I found out just entering the food and not things like spices make it easier – obviously) then did my best to calculate how much it would be.

When I had no idea – like on my crockpot chicken tortilla soup the other night? I typed it in, picked one that was close, and went a half serving up just to be safe.

BOOM. It worked.

I think my only question this week would be: how do you exercise in the heat? What do you do inside – or when do you go outside? It was 106* here almost every day that week and it was brutal.

Soooo, how did you all do? Have you just started – what week are you on? Hitting any frustrations? Have a recipe to share with us you’d like to link to? (We should do that!) You can find me as lifeasaSAHM on myfitnesspal.

Link up if you did a post today or last week about MFP, health, weight, etc:

I just wanted to say, great work! I have been struggling in the heat (it’s 100 here quite often, so I really do mean heat) and then yesterday, I got to go swimming… divine! We were staying in a hotel visiting relatives, so I don’t know how to repeat the activity: how is it that I live in a town with no YMCA and no public pool? Hmmm? But I was really in heaven in the water.

And, by the way, I struggle with being right vs being successful a lot. In life. Just in case you didn’t know already. xoxo

YAY!!! Congrats on the weight loss. Weight is something that I’ve never really struggled with but my mom and my older sister have. And, yes, it is a matter of a LOT of hard work! I’ve also learned that inches mean more than weight (look up the Pinterest pin about the difference between a pound of fat and a pound of muscle! It’s gross but amazing!).

Have you looked into the Body by Visalus? I’m now a huge believer in it after watching it make a difference in both family and friends. My mom and my sister do it in conjunction with Weight Watchers. One of my friends lost 20 lbs in less than a month doing it! My husband and I started not to lose weight but just because of the sheer health benefits. If you’re interested just shoot me a message 🙂

    I’m rooting for you!

It’s been ridiculously hot here too, and I’ve been working out in the basement with DVDs I check out from my library. Jillian Michaels’ 30 day shred is the one I’ve been working on lately, but they also have everything from Zumba to pilates/yoga to P90X… staying inside the air conditioned house is much better when it’s over 100* and humid.

First off, good on ya for working out so much. Regardless of weight loss it’s a great thing.

Personally I “beat the heat” by working out in my garage (I bought a Smith machine on Craigslist and adapted it and have bought kettle bells and what not to go along with it) and bringing out my box fan to get some air moving. Otherwise I work out after Isaac has gone to bed and it’s down to, you know, 90 rather than 100.

For cardio I just take Isaac for a long bike ride after he eats breakfast. We usually go for an hour so I try to get out of the house by 9:30 so I don’t hit the prime heat.

Also, I do all my core work inside.

Way to go!! I’m glad to hear you are seeing results from all of your hard work!

I don’t use MFP, but I am in the process of getting in shape. I Crossfit and I’m also trying to work on my running… I’d love to do a 5K soon! the heat is one of my biggest obstacles this time of year. I’ve had to switch from working out in the afternoons to getting up for a 6am workout. It’s been rough, but I can’t handle the Texas heat!

Congratulations! That’s awesome. Yes, MFP takes some getting used to, but once you do, it’s not too bad.

I write my own fitness blog. I’m no fitness expert, but I find regularly blogging about health and fitness helps me keep it on my mind and stay healthier.

I use a video called Insanity which is an intense at-home workout program, but I’ve also used ChaLEAN Extreme and P90x. Another good cardio video is TurboFire. It all depends on how you like to work out. I want to say (so it’s not a surprise) that I do sell them, so you can ask me any questions about the programs or many more.

In 2010, I lost 40 pounds using Insanity and P90x, so I know they work. Then, I had a baby, so some of the weight came back, but not all. Now I’m trying to work it all off again.

I love every recipe I’ve made from cookinglight.com — and you know whatever you choose is going to be pretty healthy. And, this one from Bon Appétit is low-cal and SUPER yummy: http://www.bonappetit.com/recipes/quick-recipes/2012/02/roasted-potatoes-and-haddock-puttanesca.

For working out, I go to an air conditioned gym. It’s too balls hot to work out anywhere else (unless of course you have a pool!).

    Congratulations, Diana!
There is nothing so motivating as seeing the results you work for. I’ve been walking about 2.5 miles on weekdays with a friend in the neighborhood. It is downright hot and muggy in Jacksonville, but we are doing it anyway. I do not look pretty … or even human … when I get home, but I love the fact that I am breathing outdoor air for 45 minutes. A long story, but I have come to crave that. Truth is, I am not losing weight with the walking (check my archives for “That Wretched Cat” – my body is not as cooperative as it used to be). Since I am hauling around an extra 20 pounds, I am finding inspiration from you and the lovely ladies commenting on your posts.

That is awesome! I think I’m finally getting the hang of this too. I’m commited and making it work. I think with it being as hot as it is all I can do is be active in the water with the kids and try to make time for the treadmill. Also, make sure you are drinking enough no matter what you are doing!

Can’t wait to see next weeks post!

I LOVE the inspiration! It’s so frustrating when the hot temps just make me want to sit around the pool and eat waterice/icecream/anything else that will freeze my face off and forget the hot hot sun. I’ve been making due with longer bike rides early in the AM or once the sun sets for the day. (We have a kid pod that both kiddies love to roll around in)

Echoing what Christine just said – there are SO MANY great fitness blogs and youtubers out there! Two gals with kick A workouts that I am loving right now are Fitnessista and Blogilates.

Great job on your weight loss!

Yes! That is so awesome!! You are really inspiring me to get it together for these last few pounds of baby weight. Despite the fact that I don’t really like counting calories it feels good to know lots of ladies are doing this too. Yay yay yay!!!

Way to go! That’s awesome progress!

I haven’t been exercising like I should, but I used to do Tae-Bo DVDs whenever it’s too hot to go outside. I’d also do yoga on my Wii Fit. I’m sure you can find exercises posted on Youtube that you can do inside!

Way to go! It’s all about consistency, right? I usually work out in a gym, but when I want to run outside with the jogger when it’s hot, I go pretty early, like right after my daughter wakes up. She’s not a big breakfast eater, so I’ll load up her sippy cup and Cheerios and hit the trail before 8. It’s still muggy, but not nearly so bad as it is later. Or you could go later at night, as long as you will really do it! I have to get my workout over with, or I’ll talk myself out of it by 7 p.m.!

WHAT?! That’s awesome!! That’s it. Color me finally inspired. Between your awesome results and my yucky post-partum bathing suit body I am going to start next week. MFP seems like a great way to do it without relying on WW anymore (which I too have done with much success over the years). And I think my husband is going to join in too!!

  • Kayla

    July 2, 2012 at 9:03 am

Yay!! I stuck with MFP this week and hit the gym with a friend more than once (3 times!!) and dropped 7 lbs! I know this is just because my body is all “wtf?! where’s the good stuff, lady?!” and this fun little trend will not continue however it was very motivating and we already have our gym schedule for this week.

The heat is just…ridiculous. Getting a gym buddy has made all the difference for me. IDK if that is an option for you but I have NEVER wanted to workout but with her, I do. It’s more like girl time than exercising. I have a toddler too so we go later, around 8. After my husband is home and we’ve had dinner as a family. If her and I can’t make it to the gym, I do jumping jacks, squats, lunges, free weights, and use the exercise ball at home. Exercise ball and weights are stupid cheap at Walmart or Academy. I despise the videos on Netflix but I know some people love them.

Recipe! I made this last night and calculated it on MFP both with and without chicken. Both came out to under 200 cal per serving and it’s very good! (I used 1% milk and 1/3 less fat cream cheese. But no tomatoes.)

Question. How do you find people on MFP? Keep up the great work!

      July 2, 2012 at 9:26 am

      NM. I figured it out.

Andplusalso? I don’t count fresh fruits and veggies on my daily calories (but I do count if I cook with them). This helps me IMMENSELY; now my go to snack is almost always fruit since I don’t have to count it. It’s my way to marry WW and MFP. I was accused of cheating (thanks, mom) but like someone said last week…no one has ever gotten fat off of carrots and apples.

    WHOOOOO-HOOOO!!! Congrats!!

I love MFP and I’m so glad it’s working for you!

I’m in Atlanta, GA, and it’s been about 103* for the past few days here, so doing anything outside is obviously out of the question, too. I’ve just been hitting the gym and I just bout Wii Fit so we’ll see how that works. Unfortunately, even though I did everything right last week, I didn’t lose any weight in the last week. 🙁 Maybe this week….

    Keep up the great job!

    Congrats on your weight loss!
When it’s stupid hot outside I tend to head to the gym, but the summer I didn’t have a gym membership, I would honest-to-god go walk at the mall or walmart, without my wallet, and just didn’t care what people thought 🙂 I’m also a big fan of workout dvds.

    July 2, 2012 at 8:33 am

    That is awesome!

I started this week. Between hearing you talk about doing it and stepping on a scale at my parent’s house (and subsequently falling off in horror) I figured it was time.

I ordered a scale so I won’t know how I am doing until it comes in on Thursday, but I do know that I am doing a decent job staying within my calorie count so far. (Let’s hope so – it’s only been a few days)

With regards to the heat, I ordered an exercise bike, because I can’t seem to schedule gym time with the toddler in the house, and the Florida heat is not exercise weather. That, and there are pilates videos on Netflix that the kid will do with me.

    Girl, that is awesome! Congrats!!

I need to get back to using that app. We’ve been walking at night and slaving over cooking light recipes, but I guess if you don’t enter, there’s still room for you to eat badly and not lose any weight, which is exactly what must be happening to me. Ok, and the two ice cream minis yesterday didn’t help, I’m sure 🙂

I’m glad you’re finding a groove and seeing results.

I’m struggling with exercising right now too. It’s been it the high 90’s with high humidity for at least two weeks…running with the babe is definitely out. I’ve been doing my normal toning routine and adding in some jumping jacks for some cardio until I can get back to running. I’m thinking I’ll try to run after the babe goes to bed but the humidity needs to come down before I attempt it.
