When I was pregnant with Bella, I bought seven pregnancy books.
I simply needed to know everything about pregnancy and what was coming at me. I figured the more I could control, the better of a time I’d have.
Ah, so young and naïve. 😉
The book that had the most use, in fact the cover started falling off, was What to Expect® When You’re Expecting. I read it cover to cover, and Sam was read to each week as we passed milestones. While I soon realized nothing was going to guarantee complete control of a pregnancy or new baby, it helped ease a lot of my fears and anxiety as a first time mom.
Although my doctor was the one to finally (at 20+ weeks) tell me I had Hyperemesis Gravidarum, I learned more about it and how to at least cope from What to Expect®. Then with each subsequent pregnancy, I was mentally prepped to handle it a bit better, especially those first few months. The Eating Well book was another that helped when I was pregnant with Preston and Julian, not being able to keep anything but smoothies down for months.
I know no one wants to consider pregnancy loss (heck if I could this pregnancy I’d avoid thinking about it too), but I do appreciate that it’s included, an entire chapter, in the Expecting book. While it might cause anxiety in some, and that’s understandable, for me at this point it’s a reassurance and guidance of coping. It also feels like it’s finally important enough to be discussed in detail, because I remember even just a few years ago finding very little open talk on losing a baby.
Did you all know that What to Expect® When You’re Expecting is the long-running book on the New York Times Bestseller list (600+ record-breaking weeks)? It’s also recommended by moms and doctors (including mine!) alike.
